Before I went vegan, pizza was my vice. Without a doubt, it was my favourite food, favourite takeaway option, you name it… Pizza was the answer. I have found a couple of vegan options since, but there’s never much choice and many chain restaurants simply don’t include cheese which, let’s be honest, isn’t ideal.
So when I got the opportunity to try out vegan pizza from a completely plant based restaurant, I jumped at the chance.
Purezza is based in St James’s Street, Brighton and they boast a diverse selection of plant based meals, starters and desserts. I’ve quite literally never before had so many options in one place.
We started with a glass of rosé and this blueberry flavoured Kombucha. The Kombucha was an acquired taste but I would recommend giving it a go; it was like a very crisp, refreshing sparkling flavoured water. If the sound of this doesn’t float your boat then there are plenty more options available: wine, beer, juices, smoothies and fizzy drinks.
We also had a bottle of tap water and glasses brought to our table which I’ve found doesn’t always happen at restaurants. I like to always have water on hand but sometimes feel awkward asking so this was a little added bonus.
For starters we went for the Focaccia Strips and the Cheesey Bites. Both were incredible and came in very generous portion sizes; always a plus in my book.
The dips are pesto, humous and beetroot, which worked really well as a combination; we kept the leftovers to dip the pizza crusts in as well which was an excellent plan.
There are some lighter options for starters and nibbles on offer which include marinated olives, vegetable crisps and mixed nuts. If you really need your cheese fix, go for the sharing cheese platter!
As a vegan, it’s really difficult to find tasty cheese replacements but this was hands down the best plant based cheese I’ve had so far. I’ve never managed to find that gloopy texture before and although there was understandably a slight difference in taste, I can’t imagine a non vegan not liking it.
The menu includes pasta, burgers and salads but we decided to go with a signature pizza dish. Just to give you a heads up, there are FOURTEEN pizzas to choose from so naturally it took us a very long time to come to a decision!
Your classics are covered: Margherita, Portobello Road (different types of mushrooms, mushroom sauce, sundried tomatoes and rocket) and Cheesus (four types of plant based cheeses) but there’s also an eclectic choice for the more adventurous diner: Indigo Island (roasted purple sweet potato, pineapple and pea pancetta), One Night In Bangkok (stir fried vegetables, sprouted beans, sriracha sauce and crunchy peanut satay sauce) and Season.4Pizza.1 (artichokes, olives, mushrooms and smoked beet).
After many deliberations we picked the a Fumosa and a Parmigiana Party. Both were contenders for the best vegan pizza ever but I think the Parmigiana Party stole the title; there were so many delicious flavours and each one complimented the others. The toppings were piled on as well, no pizza base was peeking through!
We went for the sourdough base which, in my opinion, was more tasty than a regular base and didn’t leave me with that bloated feeling afterwards. However, there are also hemp and gluten free bases available.
We’ll definitely be heading back to try out some of the others!
The size of the pizza and the amount of toppings were very generous so if you can’t finish it all, the very lovely staff will put it in a takeaway box so you can finish it off later. What’s better than Purezza pizza for lunch?

Another reason we’ll be heading back is to try the desserts! We were quite full by this point so went for a salted caramel and almond iced coffee and a rose, pomegranate and acai sorbet. The dessert menu was full of options that I’ve never been able to find vegan versions of, such as tiramisu, chocolate brownie and even a chocolate oreo pizza!
The coffee was freshly made, complete with a bamboo straw to limit waste. I’m a self professed coffee snob but this was extremely tasty and definitely passed the coffee test.
The sorbet was equally as amazing; really fruity, full of flavour, light and refreshing. Yummmm.
Overall, it was a wonderful experience and to top it off the interiors were beautiful; rustic and full of plants, helping to create a chilled, relaxed atmosphere.
The staff were so friendly and extremely knowledgable about each dish and the process of making each one. They will cater to any allergy or intolerance and can adapt most of the options to fit your needs. The menu is marked with ‘gluten free’ and ‘nut free’ options to make it that much easier and there are even three raw options.
I would thoroughly advise a visit to Purezza if you’re in or around Brighton. We travelled in from Worthing and it was a hundred percent worth the trip. We’re already planning when we can go back and who we can take with us!
Don’t be put off if not all of your party is vegan as I think the food will easily surpass any expectations and can be enjoyed by all.
